Matching Shoes and Outfits

Selecting the right shoes to go with your outfit isn’t always easy, but here we’ll go over a few steps that will help. Start by choosing a pair of shoes that complements your clothing choice, rather than competing with it. Wear a more flashy pair of shoes with a simpler ensemble, or, conversely, wear a simple pair with a vivid, printed, or highly accessorized outfit. It’s really a balancing act.

When deciding what shoes to wear, ask yourself these questions.

-Does one part of your clothing “stand out” more than others?
-Do your shoes clash with your outfit? For example- do the studs on your shoes compete with the sequins on your shirt?
-On the flip side- Do your shoes and clothing match too closely? If you wear boots, pants and a shirt that are all one color, it can end up looking like a bodysuit…(which is fine if you’re a cat burglar, but most of us aren’t

If you answered “yes” to one or more of those questions, just try on different shoes until you find the right pair. Even a rarer shoe color is simple to match to your outfit. If the color is in your clothing, then it’s generally OK to wear shoes that are the same color. If the shoe’s color isn’t there in your clothes, match darker or lighter colors with each other to keep the theme going. Complementary colors will create a startling contrast, while colors that would be next to one another on the color wheel will give a more polished, harmonious look.
