Leggings are back and better than ever. No longer are leggings to be worn with an old tee shirt around the house or to the gym. You may remember in the 80s there was the whole leggings and Flashdance look and in the early 90s the grunge look with baby doll dresses over short Capri style leggings. The look of legging today brings back some of the elements of the past but go well beyond them as well. There are so many different ways to wear leggings but the universal rule is to make sure that your top is long enough to cover your rear end.
There are few things that you should not wear leggings with. Do not pair a bold patterned legging with a bold pattern top, if they are the same pattern it will be too much of and if they are different then they will clash. Do not mistake leggings with sheer pantyhose. Leave the pantyhose for appropriate outfits like more formal dresses and skirts. Stay away from shiny Lycra leggings unless you are going to the gym, and even then you should think twice about wearing them. For the most part though, leggings can be worn many ways.
To bring the look of plaid baby doll dresses with the cropped leggings, into today’s fashion you should wear a pair of ankle length denim or black leggings with a long plaid shirt either belted, if the shirt is big and loose, or just as it is, if it is fitted. You can also wear a plaid dress, no longer than mid thigh, with leggings. Short knee length and mid calf leggings are not the fashion trend at the moment.

You can wear neon colored leggings with a solid black or other neon shirt. Another popular trend from the 80s was inspired by the movie, Flashdance; women across America were cutting up their sweatshirts to make the necklines fall off the one shoulder. Today there is no need to do that. There are plenty of stylish asymmetrical shirts that you can wear with leggings.
